VOTA: REVIEW - Sejr, Angantyr

Hail! Angantyr is a one man black metal project from Denmark created by ex-Holmgang member Ynleborgaz and today I will be reviewing the cassette version of the album Sejr, released by Total Holocaust Records and limited to 500 copies. With it, Angantyr stand defiant in the face of Christianity, and the indignation fueled rage felt towards the bastardisation and destruction of our ancestor’s cultural beliefs erupts from the speakers like a warband of Danes launching a raid on a monastery. Walking in the footsteps of great bands like Burzum and Kampfar, Angantyr’s sound is nothing short of cold brutal Black Metal filled with aggression and hatred but still varied with enough elements of that “Viking” metal style to ignite your heathen heart.

The music is extremely well played and Ynleborgaz is an immensely talented musician with not one instrument falling at the waist side (such as Abbath’s drumming on Battles in the North for example) and this gives the whole album a really robust sound. The vocals are very prominent, delivered flawlessly with hate filled venom, and the tracks that really stand out for me are the opener ‘En Falden Kriger’ & ‘Solverpilens Kald’. However picking a favourite off this album is like choosing between your children.

All in all this is one of the most unrelenting, uncompromising albums I have had the pleasure to listen too in quite some time with not a single track letting you down. It is an absolute joy to come back to time and time again and I really cannot recommend it enough. It’s epic, enthralling and you should get your hands on a copy. And not that I would ever promote a medium outside of the almighty tape, this album has also been re-released on both CD and LP with new artwork from Northern Silence Productions.

Thirty years after Jesters of Destiny arrived, dropped Fun at the Funeral and disappeared back into the night, they’re finally back with a second full length release courtesy of Ektro Records, and whilst it could never live up to first album, the eccentricity of the band shines through once more and it’s a crazy ride from start to finish.
